Stay safe this summer: Fire safety tips for the season

Summer is a time for cookouts, celebrations, and fun—but it also brings increased fire risks. Whether you’re lighting the grill or watching fireworks, a few simple precautions can protect your home and loved ones.

Grilling Safety

  • Use grills outdoors only—never inside a garage, tent, or enclosed space.
  • Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup to prevent flare-ups.
  • Place the grill well away from anything that can catch fire, like siding, railings, or overhanging branches.
  • Always open the lid before lighting a gas grill.
  • Never leave the grill unattended, especially when children or pets are nearby.
  • Create a safety zone—keep kids and pets at least three feet away from the grill area.

Fireworks Safety

  • Leave fireworks to the professionals. Public displays are much safer than home use.
  • Never allow children to play with fireworks, even sparklers, which can burn at extremely high temperatures.
  • Keep a safe distance and follow instructions if you are near a fireworks event.

General Tips

  • Have water or a fire extinguisher nearby when using grills or attending outdoor fire events.
  • Be weather aware. Avoid grilling or lighting anything during high winds or dry conditions.

Enjoy your summer—and help keep it safe for everyone. A little caution goes a long way in preventing tragedy.
