Ready for the Call: Intensive Training Drills of Minoa FD

Minoa Fire Department firefighters train continuously to keep their skills sharp and remain ready for the emergencies our community may face. Over the past two weeks, members participated in two major hands-on training exercises: water rescue operations at Erie Lake in Manlius and a simulated mass-casualty vehicle incident.
Water Rescue
On July 13, firefighters trained at Erie Lake in the Erie Village area of Manlius. Water-rescue training prepares members to make thoughtful, coordinated decisions in an environment where conditions can change quickly. Exercises commonly include scene safety and incident-command briefings, assessing hazards, deploying boats and shore-based rescue equipment, communicating between rescuers and support personnel, and practicing ways to reach, secure, and bring a victim safely to shore.
During this drill, members worked with a boat, rescue rings, rope, and a water-rescue board—a buoyant board with straps and handles that can help secure a victim while rescuers tow them to safety. Training reinforces that water entry is performed only by properly trained and equipped personnel, while shore-based members provide essential support with ropes, flotation devices, and other rescue equipment.
Mass Casualty incident
On July 20, Minoa Fire Department conducted a mass-casualty incident drill with the expert guidance and assistance of Mattydale Fire Chief Brian Felise. The scenario involved four motor vehicles that had been involved in a serious simulated crash. Four actors portrayed patients with varying levels of injury, while five training dummies—including two infants—added to the complexity of the exercise.
Mass-casualty drills help firefighters and emergency medical personnel practice organizing a large, fast-moving emergency. Typical exercises include establishing unified command with law enforcement and other agencies; creating safe work areas; accounting for personnel; rapidly assessing and triaging patients; providing immediate life-saving care; stabilizing vehicles; using rescue tools such as drills, saws, and stabilization bracing; establishing treatment areas; and coordinating patient transport with hospitals. These drills emphasize clear communication, teamwork, and disciplined decision-making so that resources can be directed where they are needed most.
Readiness
These exercises are intense by design. By realistically simulating rescue and emergency situations, Minoa Fire Department members build the confidence, coordination, and practical experience needed to serve when real emergencies occur. The people of the Minoa fire protection community can be assured of high-quality emergency services delivered by dedicated, professional firefighters.
